Bacteriostatic Water for Injection, USP is a sterile, nonpyrogenic preparation of Water for Injection containing 0.9% (9 mg/mL) benzyl alcohol as a bacteriostatic preservative.
It is supplied in multiple-dose vials and is designed solely for use as a pharmaceutic aid — specifically for the dilution or reconstitution of medications intended for intravenous, intramuscular, or subcutaneous injection, in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions for the drug being administered.
Composition: Sterile Water for Injection + 0.9% benzyl alcohol (preservative).
pH: Approximately 5.7 (range 4.5–7.0).
Preservative Effect: The benzyl alcohol inhibits the growth of microorganisms, allowing the vial to be punctured multiple times while maintaining sterility (unlike preservative-free Sterile Water for Injection, which is intended for single use only).
Intended Use: Reconstitution of lyophilized (freeze-dried) peptides, hormones, and other injectable medications. It is not intended for direct intravenous administration as a standalone fluid.
